Winter Wedding

When Trevor and I got engaged in April of 2013 we knew immediately that we wanted to have a winter wedding. My grandmother had left my mother several of her Mink furs and when we started planning our February wedding I knew I had to wear one.
After several trips to bridal boutiques to try on gowns, I decided that a formal wedding dress was not for me. I didn’t want to wear something bulky and was struggling to find a style that would allow me to move easily without weighing me down.

Our colors for the wedding were black, ivory white and gold (Chanel) and I knew i wanted to draft off of those colors for my outfit. After finding a bridal skirt online that I liked, I decided to order it and give it a try. If it didn’t work I could always return it. The skirt fit great and then began the search for a champagne gold silk top (I had a very specific vision), which I found just a few days later, also online and even on sale!
The week of our wedding, snow was in the forecast, which meant a few things – We were going to have the most beautiful pictures and a memorable night that no one would ever forget. It also meant additional stress. We had to cancel a few of our wedding day plans due to the weather conditions and also began to hear from people that they were unable to travel into Portland.
The night before the wedding the bridal party stayed at Hotel Lucia and enjoyed a night out at my cousin’s Lounge, The Tube. The next morning we got an early start on the day and began getting ready with the snow falling steadily outside.
Real Wedding
One of the best parts of the day was getting to see Trevor for the first time. It helped the stress of the weather fade away. After our first look and some photos at the hotel, we drove around town to take some photos outside. We landed in the Pearl District and had to snap a few photos in front of 24 Hour Fitness, which is where we met!
We wanted our event to feel more like a party than a traditional wedding. We started the event a bit later in the evening and served heavy passed and plated appetizers, bite-size desserts and plenty of alcohol. We incorporated table top games and large gold balloons because we also wanted the event to feel playful. The decor at the wedding was understated and simple but beautiful with accents of gold and bright white flowers.
Real Wedding
We are both pretty laid back and wanted the ceremony and party to feel intimate but relaxed. I skipped having a grand entrance and as our guests arrived, we met them at the door with a hug. Appetizers were passed and champagne flowed for the first hour of the event, at which point we asked everyone to join us on the dance floor. Our friends and family gathered around us forming a semi circle for a standing ceremony. Union Pine, the event space, has a sunken room that allowed some guests to stand above, along the railing, ensuring that everyone had a view. One of our closest friends, Brett Olson, married us in a ceremony that seamlessly transitioned from hilariously funny – the story of how we met – to romantic and traditional – the vows and rings exchange.

At the end of our ceremony, Brett asked our guests to raise a glass and introduced us as Mr. and Mrs. Dodge, followed immediately by DJ Nature dropping Good Life by Kanye West, which kicked off the dance party. It was the perfect way to end a perfect winter wedding.
